Why Rabbit Farming is the Underrated Side Income for Nigerian Families

Poultry gets all the attention in Nigerian farming discussions. Rabbits are rarely mentioned, which is exactly why they represent a real opportunity for those paying attention.

The Numbers That Make Rabbits Work

A single doe (female rabbit) produces 4 to 6 litters per year, with 6 to 10 kits per litter. A conservatively managed doe gives you 30 to 40 offspring annually.

With 10 does:

• Annual offspring: 300 to 400 rabbits
• Market weight: 2 to 2.5 kg at 12 weeks
• Current market price: N2,500 to N4,000 per rabbit (live or dressed, depending on your channel)

At the low end, 300 rabbits at N2,500 each is N750,000 per year from a setup that costs less to run than a 200-bird poultry operation.

Why Rabbits Cost Less to Run

Rabbits eat grass, vegetable scraps, and low-cost pellets. In many Nigerian settings, feed is free or nearly free for the first six months if you have access to a yard or garden waste. Their water consumption is low. Their housing is simpler.

The biggest cost is the hutch construction and the breeding stock. After that, the operation is largely self-funding.

The Market Is Real

The demand for rabbit meat in Nigeria comes from three channels: direct household sales, restaurants and hotels (especially those with health-conscious menus), and the growing middle class who see rabbit as premium protein. Easter and Christmas periods see sharp price spikes.

Rabbit farming works best as a complementary operation alongside poultry or another income stream. The low daily labour requirement (feeding and watering takes under 30 minutes for 50 rabbits) makes it genuinely manageable alongside other work.
